SCASA Student Recognition Luncheon

Julie and Kurt

HSC ALSJ students Julie Vargas and Kurt LoPresto were recognized for their many achievements at this year’s SCASA student recognition luncheon.

After distinguishing herself at High School in the Community Academy for Law and Social Justice through her work with the student council and the Future Project, Julie was accepted into the Outstanding High School Senior Program at the University of New Haven. She is now studying full time at UNH. Prior to being accepted into OHSSP, Julie completed Advanced Placement classes at HSC, as well as course work at the University of New Haven and at the University of Connecticut through the UCONN Mentor Connection program. She has also studied photography at the Center for Creative Youth at Wesleyan and has used her artistic vision to support her activism through her work at Youth Rights Media, a non-profit organization based in New Haven.

Kurt LoPresto is the president of the High School in the Community Academy for Law and Social Justice Student Council, an active group that has organized initiatives to provide opportunities and activities for students, as well as to increase parental involvement at HSC. He has completed more than 80 hours of volunteer service at the Peabody Museum as a member of the Sci Corps program and has taken a lead role in the HSC school blood drives. After taking his first Advanced Placement class last year, he sought further academic challenges. This year, he took a college course in history at the University of New Haven and is enrolled in four Advanced Placement classes.
